The Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola OLATUNJI-BELLO, mni, NPOM, has charged newly admitted Sandwich Degree Programme students to embrace diligence, discipline, and consistency as essential pillars for academic success.

She gave this charge on Friday, 10th April 2026, during the matriculation ceremony held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, Lagos State University Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos, where students of the 2025 Modular Year Sandwich Degree Programmes were formally admitted into the University.

In her address, the Vice-Chancellor, who was ably represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Oseni AFISI, emphasised that success in the programme would require deliberate effort, stating unequivocally that “success in this programme will not be accidental; it will be earned through diligence, sacrifice, and consistency.” She further urged the students to remain focused, committed, and intentional in their academic pursuits.

While charging the new cohorts, she described the occasion as a defining moment in the students’ academic and personal journeys. She noted that matriculation is more than a ceremonial exercise, describing it as “a solemn covenant between you and the University, requiring adherence to discipline, institutional regulations, and a strong commitment to the pursuit of knowledge.”

The Vice-Chancellor further highlighted the unique nature of the Sandwich Degree Programme, which caters to individuals balancing academic work with other responsibilities. According to her, “this dual responsibility requires strength of character, discipline, and unwavering focus,” as she encouraged the students to manage their time effectively and maximise available learning opportunities.

Reinforcing the University’s zero-tolerance stance on indiscipline, she warned against misconduct, including examination malpractice and cultism, stressing that such actions would not be condoned.

She also advised students to be mindful of their associations, reminding them that “bad company corrupts good character.”

Beyond academics, the Vice-Chancellor encouraged the matriculants to build meaningful relationships and networks, noting that their peers could become future collaborators and lifelong partners.

She concluded by urging the students to uphold the values of integrity, excellence, and service and to represent the University with pride throughout their academic journey.

In his remarks, the Director, Sandwich Degree Programme, Professor John ADEOGUN, described the students as a unique group balancing academic pursuits with other life responsibilities. He noted that the programme is structured to equip them with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to excel in their chosen careers.

He added that the Directorate adopts a student-centred approach, prioritising the success and well-being of its students. He said, “We recognise that Sandwich students often face unique challenges, including balancing academic responsibilities with work and family commitments. We are committed to supporting you every step of the way,” the Director stated.

The matriculation ceremony concluded with the formal administration of the admission oath, which officially welcomed the students into the Lagos State University community.
