NUC TEAM VISITS LASU……..Commends readiness for the proposed BSc Social Work Programme

The National Universities Commission (NUC) Resource Verification Team has commended Lagos State University for its physical infrastructure, academic structure, and operational readiness for the proposed Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Social Work programme.

‎‎The NUC Team Lead on the Resource Verification assessment exercise, Professor Peace *IREFIN* gave the commendation on Monday, 24th August 2026, at the meeting held in the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room, 6th floor, Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, LASU Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos.‎‎

The three-member team from the Commission comprised Mr Paul *EBEGBUMA* and Theodore *UNUAJOH*, and was received by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Oseni *AFISI*, FSPSP, MCIoD, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola *OLATUNJI-BELLO*, mni, NPOM.

‎Professor *IREFIN*, while commending the University Management for its hospitality, support and cooperation throughout the exercise, explained that the assessment was carried out in order to ensure quality, and determine whether the proposed programme satisfied the NUC’s Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), and other relevant requirements.‎‎

She noted that the philosophy and curriculum of the proposed BSc Social Work programme were in compliance with the NUC’s CCMAS and the National Policy on Education. She applauded the University’s preparedness in other key areas, including academic staffing, instructional facilities, offices, accommodation, library and digital resources.‎

The Team Lead further appreciated the University Management for making provision for adequate teaching and non-teaching staff, laboratory facilities, well-equipped staff offices, and access to up-to-date academic resources. She added that the availability of functional e-library and e-learning systems, alongside reliable internet connectivity will further boost effective teaching, learning and research work.‎‎

While describing the preliminary findings of the NUC team as encouraging and impressive, Professor *IREFIN* advised the University to strengthen its academic staff complement to support those already in the Faculty.‎‎

Responding, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor *AFISI*, praised the NUC team for its objective and thorough assessment, describing the feedback as a valuable roadmap for sustained improvement. His words; “The positive feedback with regards to our areas of strength is a clear testament to the deliberate investment that the Lagos State University has continued to make towards academic excellence. The University Management is committed to strengthening the programme with additional academic staff members who possess the required specialised qualifications in Social Work’, he concluded.

The vote of thanks was delivered on behalf of the Registrar, Mr Emmanuel A. *FANU*, MANUPA, FCAI, by the Deputy Registrar, (Vice-Chancellor’s Office), Dr Lateef *SHEKONI*.

‎‎Other Principal Officers present at the meeting were the Bursar, Mr Olabisi *YUSUF*, represented by the Senior Deputy Bursar (Epe), Mr Jerry M *JINADU*; and the University Librarian, Dr Omawumi *MAKINDE*.

Also in attendance were; the Director, Academic Planning, Professor Rasheed *SANNI*; Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Olufemi *LAWAL*; members of staff from the Faculty of Social Sciences, Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics)’ Office, Academic Planning, University Multimedia Centre (UMC), and Centre for Information and Public Relations (CIPR).‎‎
