*Lagos State University (LASU) has recorded another significant milestone in its sustainability and environmental leadership efforts, following its recognition by the UI GreenMetric Steering Committee for the University’s sustained commitment to environmental sustainability.Consequently, LASU has secured the renewal of its National and Regional Coordinatorship of UI GreenMetric for another year, while also being elevated to the Co-Chairmanship of key sessions at UI GreenMetric international events for the 2026/2027 academic session.
The development was contained in a special congratulatory note addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola *OLATUNJI-BELLO*, mni, NPOM, fspsp, by Dr Vishnu *JUWONO*, the new Chairperson, UI GreenMetric, and conveyed by Professor Adejuwon *ADENEYE*, Director, Directorate of Research Management and Innovation, who is currently participating in the 12th International Workshop on GreenMetric (12th IWGM) at Trier University of Applied Sciences, Umwelt-Campus, Birkenfeld, Saarbrücken, Germany.
According to the message, the double recognition by the UI GreenMetric Steering Committee is an acknowledgement of LASU’s “unwavering consistency and strategic commitment to environmental sustainability”.Dr *JUWONO* noted that the renewal of the University’s National and Regional Coordinatorship, alongside its elevation to Co-Chairmanship of key sessions at international UI GreenMetric events for the 2026/2027 academic session, represents significant recognition of LASU’s growing leadership in sustainability.
Professor *ADENEYE*, in a separate correspondence to the Vice-Chancellor, described the development as “a monumental win for LASU and a resounding validation” of the administration’s progressive agenda. He further described the recognition as “a testament to your sterling leadership, dedication to institutional excellence, and relentless drive to position LASU among the world’s top eco-friendly and sustainable universities”.
Reacting to the recognition, the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola *OLATUNJI-BELLO*, mni, NPOM, described the development as a collective achievement for the University, noting that it reflects the commitment of the University community to building a more sustainable institution.She said: “This recognition is both an honour and a responsibility. It affirms that our commitment to sustainability is yielding results and that LASU is increasingly being recognised as a responsible global institution.
I congratulate the entire LASU community on this achievement and appreciate everyone whose dedication has contributed to our sustainability journey. We will continue to deepen our efforts, strengthen our partnerships and ensure that sustainability remains an integral part of the LASU story.”The latest recognition further reinforces LASU’s growing profile in the global sustainability community and reflects the University’s sustained efforts to embed environmental sustainability within its institutional development agenda.
The University Management appreciates the UI GreenMetric Steering Committee for the recognition and Professor *ADENEYE* for communicating the development, while reaffirming LASU’s commitment to advancing sustainable practices, research and institutional initiatives that contribute meaningfully to environmental resilience and sustainable development.
It will be recalled that LASU entered the UI GreenMetric rankings in September 2022 and immediately established itself as a regional leader. Its peak continental performance came in the 2024 cycle, when it climbed to number one in Sub-Saharan Africa and 23rd overall on the Africa.
Despite the rapid expansion in global participation in the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings — from nearly 1,000 participating institutions in 2022 to 1,745 in 2025 — LASU has consistently remained in the top half of institutions worldwide, supported by an overall score of over 6,000 points.
