ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: DR TUNDE AJAYI, GENERAL MANAGER, LAGOS STATE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (LASEPA)

Dr Tunde Ajayi is the General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), an institution responsible for environmental health regulation, pollution control, and public health surveillance in Lagos State.

He obtained his first degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM). He later pursued advanced academic training, earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Health Policy from Euclid University, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Warwick – Warwick Business School, a Master’s in Public Health (Epidemiology Track) from Université Catholique de Louvain, and a Master’s in Public Health (Disaster Response Track) from the Universidad de Oviedo under the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship programme. He also completed the Authentic Leaders Development Program at Harvard Business School.

His professional career has focused on public health systems strengthening, epidemiology, and environmental health policy, with particular emphasis on infectious disease preparedness and response.

Prior to his current appointment, he served as Special Assistant (Health) to the Lagos State Government during the COVID-19 pandemic response. In this role, he contributed to coordination efforts around oxygen supply and distribution across public health facilities in Lagos State, supporting access to critical care resources during the pandemic.

Dr Ajayi was also involved in the development of epidemiological surveillance tools to support COVID-19 response activities, as well as efforts to strengthen private laboratory testing capacity within the state. He contributed to the documentation of Lagos State’s pandemic response, including co-authoring a chapter in Inoculating Cities: The Lagos State COVID Experience.

His work continues to focus on the intersection of environmental health, disease surveillance, and policy implementation within the framework of public health governance in Lagos State.
