LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY (LASU) BOOSTS CAMPUS SECURITY WITH A THREE-DAY CAPACITY-BUILDING PROGRAMME
Lagos State University (LASU) has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe, secure, and conducive environment for teaching, learning, research and community service with a three-day capacity-building programme for personnel of the Security Unit in the Vice-Chancellor’s Office.
The training, held from Wednesday, 1st July to Friday, 3rd July 2026, at Hall 5, Faculty of Law Building, Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos, was designed to strengthen the professional competence of security personnel through contemporary security management practices, technology-driven policing strategies and modern approaches to addressing emerging security challenges within the University environment.
The programme, themed *”Modern Campus Security Management: Theft Prevention in the University Environment and General Handling, Control, and Safekeeping of Firearms,”* reflects the University’s commitment to enhancing institutional security through continuous professional development.
In his welcome address, the Chief Security Coordinator, CSP Oluwole *OJO* (Rtd), described the initiative as a strategic investment in the professional development of the University’s security personnel. He noted that the evolving nature of security threats demands continuous learning, operational efficiency and discipline, while ensuring that security operations uphold human rights and professional ethics.
He urged participants to adopt a “train-the-trainer” approach by sharing the knowledge gained with colleagues who were unable to attend. He also appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and the University Management for their unwavering support in strengthening the University’s security workforce.
Goodwill messages were delivered by the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Olufemi *LAWAL*; Dean, Students’ Affairs Division, Dr Abiodun *FATAI-ABATAN*; Chairman, Security Committee, Prof. Kehinde *JAMES*; Director, Legal Division, Mrs Olajumoke *BOYEJO*, represented by the Senior Assitant Registrar., Legal Division, Mr Sunday *FANU*; and Operations Officer II, Mr Ruben *BALOGUN*. They commended the dedication, professionalism and vigilance of the Security Unit, describing its personnel as key contributors to the peaceful academic environment across the University. They also applauded the Unit’s prompt emergency response, effective collaboration with the Students’ Affairs Division, and the professionalism of officers stationed at the University’s entrance gates and the Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building.
Delivering the keynote lecture, Professor Adedeji *OYENUGA* emphasised the growing importance of technology in modern security operations and recommended the installation of additional strategically positioned CCTV cameras to strengthen surveillance and crime prevention across the campus.
Drawing on a practical example, he explained how forensic image analysis, professional facial reconstruction and Artificial Intelligence were successfully used to identify a burglary suspect from poor-quality CCTV footage. While highlighting the benefits of technology in crime detection, he stressed that its use must always respect the rights and privacy of members of the University community.
Professor *ADEDEJI* identified five pillars of effective campus security management: *governance and accountability; risk assessment and early warning; physical and digital protection; crisis response and continuity; and rights, ethics and periodic review*. He also advocated the establishment of a cross-functional Campus Security Council comprising representatives of Management, staff unions, security personnel and health services to strengthen institutional security governance.
In another presentation, SP Abiodun Adeleke *OBAFEMI* underscored the importance of strict adherence to universal firearm safety protocols and proper threat assessment before the discharge of any weapon.
He reminded participants that every firearm must always be treated as though it is loaded and advised officers to physically cock and inspect the chamber of every firearm during handovers to confirm that it is clear, thereby preventing avoidable accidents.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr Edu *BABATUNDE*, who expressed appreciation to the University Management, resource persons and participants for their commitment to strengthening security service delivery and promoting continuous improvements in campus safety.
The training reflects Lagos State University’s commitment to strengthening its security architecture through continuous professional development, strategic collaboration and the responsible deployment of modern technology, while sustaining a safe and enabling environment for academic excellence.
